River Cats Headline News Briefs
Heliot Ramos and David Villar's Homers Ignite Sacramento River Cats' Spectacular 8-1 Victory
NOV 20 // Photo @LBPRC// Ponce, Puerto Rico
The Maunabo-born brothers, Henry and Heliot Ramos, received the new uniforms of the Santurce Crabbers from the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (LBPRC) this Saturday, ahead of the team's victory over the Ponce Lions at Hiram Bithorn Stadium. Heliot, affiliated with the San Francisco Giants playing most of the season with the Sacramento River Cats, will be the first to play when he debuts next week, according to Santurce's general manager, Kelvin Colón. Henry, who belongs to the Cincinnati Reds, will start wearing his new uniform in early December. The decision is due to personal commitments of the outfielder with his foundation, HR 14 Baseball Program. The Ramos brothers are considered high-quality additions to the Santurce team, currently leading the winter league with a record of 7-3.

Sacramento River Cats to Host San Francisco Giants in Exhibition Game Marking 25th Anniversary
SEP 25 // Photo Mauricio Segura GBT // Sacamento, CA
The San Francisco Giants are set to return to Sacramento as the Sacramento River Cats will host the Giants in an exhibition game on March 24 at Sutter Health Park, marking the beginning of the River Cats' 25th-anniversary campaign. The Giants, who took over Sacramento's Major League affiliation in 2014, will play their Triple-A affiliate for the first time since 2018. The exhibition game aims to generate enthusiasm and energy from a capacity crowd, following the success of similar games in 2016 and 2018. Giants President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi expressed excitement about bringing Giants baseball directly to the Sacramento community, emphasizing the high-quality ballpark experience at Sutter Health Park. The ties between the Giants and the Sacramento region include players like Logan Webb and J.D. Davis, both with local connections, and assistant coach Alyssa Nakken, a Woodland native who made baseball history in 2022 as the first woman to coach on the field during a Major League game.

Giants Consider Minor Leaguer Tyler Fitzgerald Amid Season Struggles
SEP 20 // Photo ERSE 21 GBT // San Francisco, CA
The San Francisco Giants may be considering calling up Tyler Fitzgerald, a versatile minor leaguer known for his athleticism. Although not ranked in MLB Pipeline’s Top 30 for the Giants' system, Fitzgerald has showcased impressive defensive skills, capable of playing multiple positions. With a 20-20 season in 2023, including 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases, Fitzgerald's potential call-up is linked to the Giants' need for added speed and outfield capability. Despite concerns about his swing-and-miss tendencies, the Giants are contemplating his promotion as they seek to inject enthusiasm and energy into a challenging season. However, uncertainties exist regarding the 40-man roster, with potential moves like placing Brandon Crawford on the 60-day IL or designating a pitcher for assignment being considered.

Giants Outright Bryce Johnson to River Cats After Roster Moves
SEP 3 // Photo ERSE 21 GBT // Sacramento, CA
The San Francisco Giants outrighted outfielder Bryce Johnson to Triple-A Sacramento, designating him for assignment to make room for Mitch Haniger on the 40-man roster. Despite going unclaimed on waivers, Johnson opted not to become a free agent, preserving his 40-man roster salary. A sixth-round pick in 2017, Johnson climbed through the Giants' minor-league system, showcasing contact-focused offense, elite speed, and center field defense. After a brief stint in the majors last year, he was designated for assignment but re-signed on a minor-league contract. Although impressive in spring training, he narrowly missed the Opening Day roster due to a trade issue. The 27-year-old excelled with the Sacramento River Cats this season but struggled in the majors. With promising young outfielders emerging, Johnson's chances of another MLB opportunity with the Giants seem slim. Despite this, he is expected to finish the season with the organization before likely exploring opportunities elsewhere in the offseason.

MILB Headline News Briefs
Rome Emperors Unveil Creative Rebrand with Penguin Logo
NOV 17 // Photo ERSE021 GBT // Rome, GA
The city of Rome, Georgia, has embraced its historical connection by officially rebranding its minor league baseball team as the Rome Emperors. Serving as the High-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, the team has chosen to distinguish itself from its MLB counterpart for the first time in its history. In a creative move to establish a unique local brand, the Emperors drew inspiration from Roman history, incorporating an Emperor Penguin into their logo rather than opting for a stereotypical Roman figure. The penguin, symbolizing dominance and conquest, wears a laurel wreath and toga while holding a baseball bat, with additional nods to the team's inaugural season in Rome through Roman numerals and secondary logos featuring a full-bodied penguin and an "R" crafted from Roman columns.

Daytona Tortugas Secure 20-Year Lease Extension at Historic Jackie Robinson Ballpark with Upgrades
NOV 16 // Photo @Florida State League // Daytona, FL
The Daytona Tortugas, a Single-A team in the Florida State League, have secured a 20-year extension to continue playing at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach. The new lease, which includes options for an additional 10 years, was signed with the City of Daytona Beach. The agreement involves renovations to bring the ballpark up to the standards set by Minor League Baseball (MiLB) for facilities. The historic venue has hosted affiliated professional baseball since Daytona's Florida State League debut in 1920. Upgrades covered by the lease include new LED field lights, a batter's eye in center field, and the replacement of foul poles. The Tortugas' General Manager expressed excitement about the continued tradition, and the city officials and team owners emphasized the significance of the partnership and the historical importance of the ballpark within the community.

MLB Settles Lawsuits with Minor League Teams
NOV 2 // Photo ERSE021 GBT // New York, NY
Major League Baseball (MLB) has settled three lawsuits filed by minor league teams that lost their major league affiliations. This move helps MLB avoid a potential Supreme Court challenge to its longstanding antitrust exemption dating back to 1922. The terms of the settlement, reached in federal and state courts in New York, remain confidential. The legal action stemmed from MLB's decision in 2020 to reduce its minor league affiliation agreements from 160 to 120, leading teams like the Staten Island Yankees, Norwich Sea Unicorns, and Tri-City ValleyCats to file suits alleging violations of the Sherman Antitrust Act. The federal suit was dismissed due to the antitrust exemption, a decision upheld by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, avoiding the need for Supreme Court intervention.

Sugar Land's Shay Whitcomb Nears Astros History with Minor League Home Run Lead
SEP 19 // Photo Hal Larsen GBT // Sugar Land, TX
With a week remaining in the Triple-A season, Shay Whitcomb of the Sugar Land Space Cowboys is on the verge of making Houston Astros history by leading Minor League Baseball in home runs with 35. The Space Cowboys shortstop is close to surpassing the Astros' minor league single-season record of 37 home runs, held by George Springer in 2013. Whitcomb, aiming for the Joe Bauman Home Run Award, has downplayed the pursuit to stay focused on his approach at the plate. Despite a dip in on-base percentage, Whitcomb's power surge is attributed to swing changes and increased strength, impressing Space Cowboys manager Mickey Storey. Whitcomb, slashing .236/.279/.458 in 81 games, aims to improve his walk rate and sees potential growth in the Pacific Coast League in the future. The 24-year-old hopes for an opportunity with the Astros' taxi squad or an Arizona Fall League invite, but if not, he plans to focus on building strength during the offseason.
