Jack Gurr: Republic FC's Defensive MVP Shines in Standout Season
NOV 20 // Photo Mauricio Segura GBT // Tampa, FL
Republic FC's Jack Gurr emerged as the defensive MVP after a stellar season, where the team boasted the best defense in the USL Championship. Gurr's breakout performance on the right flank earned him this accolade, with career-best stats of 5 goals and 6 assists. Notably, he ranked fifth in the league for chances created (61), the highest for a backline player since 2017. His defensive prowess was evident, securing third place on the club for tackles won (28) and duels won (128). Gurr's consistent excellence earned him five Team of the Week selections, a spot on the All-League First Team, and a nomination for USL Championship Defender of the Year alongside teammate Conor Donovan. His impact was recognized league-wide with inclusion in the USLPA Best XI. Key moments included a crucial role in the victory against defending champion San Antonio FC and contributing two assists in the win securing the Western Conference regular season crown against Rio Grande Valley FC on October 7.

Danny Vitiello: USL Goalkeeper of the Year 2023 with Sacramento Republic FC
NOV 14 // Photo Mauricio Segura GBT // Tampa, FL
Sacramento Republic FC's Danny Vitiello was named the USL Championship Goalkeeper of the Year for the 2023 season, marking the first time a Republic FC goalkeeper has earned this honor. Vitiello played a pivotal role in the league's most formidable defense, achieving a career-best with 11 shutouts and 82 saves. This outstanding performance earned him a spot on the All-League First Team and his second Golden Glove, making him only the second player in league history to receive the award twice. Vitiello, who finished the regular season as the club's all-time leader in clean sheets, expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches, and the Sacramento Republic FC organization and fans for their support. The award, determined by votes from the club's technical staff, executives, and a league-wide panel, saw Vitiello secure 49% of the vote, surpassing competitors Paul Blanchette of Oakland Roots SC and Nathan Steinwascher of Detroit City FC. Vitiello looks forward to continuing his success, recently signing a multi-year contract extension with Republic FC.

Sacramento Republic FC: A Decade of Indomitable Spirit and Soccer Excellence
NOV 9 // Photo Mauricio Segura GBT // Sacramento, CA
The Sacramento Republic Football Club, in its celebratory 10th season, has embraced the City of Sacramento's motto, "Urbs Indomita" (Indomitable City), reflecting the team's resilient spirit. Despite the challenges faced by past soccer teams in the city, the Sac Republic has connected deeply with the community, staying true to its name. This season, marked by a playoff run, brings reflection on the team's journey from its inaugural sold-out match at Hughes Stadium in 2014 to its current home at Heart Health Park. The decade also witnessed the highs of an unexpected USL title and a Major League Soccer bid, albeit withdrawn in 2021 due to various factors. While stadium plans remain in flux, the Sac Republic's community involvement, diverse fan support, and key players like Rodrigo "RoRo" Lopez continue to shape the team's success and bright future.

Sacramento Republic FC Awaits New Stadium Announcement for City Boost
OCT 27 // Photo ERSE 021 GBT // Sacramento, CA
In June, the Sacramento Republic Football Club announced plans for a new soccer stadium at the Sacramento Railyards, but as of October, the official announcement is still pending. The potential construction of the Railyards Stadium is anticipated to be a significant development for Sacramento and its sports community, following the recent successes of teams like the Sacramento Kings and the Sacramento State football team. The stadium, with a projected capacity of over 12,000 fans, could position Sac Republic for potential MLS expansion, providing economic benefits to the city. The larger stage and higher level of competition in the MLS, coupled with the recent signing of global soccer star Lionel Messi, could attract a broader local audience to soccer games and contribute to the city's growth and sporting culture. The call for swift action on the stadium's construction reflects the eagerness of both the Sac Republic organization and Sacramento's leadership to enhance the city's sports landscape.

Phoenix Rising FC Secures First USL Championship in Dramatic Shootout
NOV 13 // Photo @Phoenix Rising FC // Charleston, SC
In a remarkable and improbable journey, Phoenix Rising FC secured their first-ever USL Championship title, triumphing in a penalty shootout against Charleston Battery at Patriot Point Soccer Stadium in Charleston, S.C. Despite the match officially ending as a 1-1 draw, Phoenix Rising claimed the trophy with a 3-2 penalty-shootout victory. The victory marked an unprecedented accomplishment as Phoenix Rising became the first team in the history of the USL Championship to win every playoff match on the road en route to the league title. Manager Juan Guerra expressed the emotional significance of the victory, highlighting the team's resilience and refusal to give up, especially after trailing in three of the four playoff matches. Goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo earned MVP honors, making critical saves, and the decisive moment came in the penalty shootout when Charleston Battery's Derek Dodson hit the post, securing Phoenix Rising's historic triumph. Guerra emphasized the team's resiliency and character, referring to them as a "group of savages." The victory concluded a season that started and ended with a 1-1 draw against Charleston Battery, and Guerra now dreams of winning a title at home in Phoenix in the future.

USL Secures Four-Year Media Rights Deal with CBS Sports for Men's Soccer
NOV 7 // Photo @Pittsbugh Riverhounds // Tampa, FL
The United Soccer League (USL) has inked a four-year media rights deal with CBS Sports, covering 100 men's soccer matches annually from the USL Championship and USL League One for the 2024-2027 seasons. This agreement marks the first of two media rights deals for the upcoming season, with a potential ESPN renewal being the second. The CBS Sports deal is set to generate mid-to-high seven figures annually, a significant increase from the current ESPN deal. CBS Sports will broadcast select matches on its flagship channel, including the USL Championship final, and over 20 matches on its CBS Sports Network cable channel. The remaining 75 matches will be available exclusively on CBS' free, ad-supported Golazo Network. Additionally, local broadcast deals for USL teams are permitted. The second to-be-announced broadcast partner will cover the remaining 500 matches across linear and streaming platforms, with around 5% airing on national linear TV. USL Chief Commercial Officer Court Jeske emphasized the strategic focus on increasing distribution and market reach, and the league will also explore media rights for its new women's league, the USL Super League, set to debut next summer.
Jermaine Jones Appointed Head Coach of Central Valley Fuego FC
OCT 27 // Photo ERSE 021 GBT // Fresno, CA
Former USMNT midfielder Jermaine Jones has reportedly been appointed as the head coach of USL League One club Central Valley Fuego FC, according to sources familiar with the discussions. The players were notified of the new head coach's arrival on November 1 through official communication from the club. Jones, 41, who earned 69 caps for the USMNT and played in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, has been vocal about his coaching aspirations since retiring as a player. Currently serving as the assistant manager of the U.S. U-19 youth national team, Jones holds a UEFA Pro coaching license and has previously worked with youth teams and served as an assistant manager for NISA club New Amsterdam FC. Despite expressing challenges in securing coaching opportunities, Jones has made a positive impression on players in his coaching roles. Central Valley Fuego FC recently completed its second season in USL League One, finishing at the bottom of the table, and Jones is set to take charge after the team's struggle under interim management in the latter part of the 2023 season.

USL Going to Portland
SEP 08 // Photo ERSE 021 GBT // Portland, ME
After five years of effort, a dream has come true for Gabe Hoffman-Johnson, a former soccer player from Maine, with the announcement of a new professional soccer team in Portland. The United Soccer League revealed that Portland will host a franchise in USL League One, marking the 15th expansion city for the division. Hoffman-Johnson, who captained the Dartmouth College men's soccer team and played professionally, returned to Maine with the dream of bringing a franchise to Portland. The announcement is expected to generate over $10 million in tax revenue and create around 50 jobs in the region. The team will play at Fitzpatrick Stadium, with modern upgrades funded by private backers, including property developer Jonathan Culley and NESN Red Sox broadcaster Tom Caron. The proposal awaits approval from the Portland City Council, and if approved, the team aims to kick off its first season in spring 2025.

JUL 08 // Photo James Ritter GBT // Tampa, FL
Neill Collins, former head coach of the Tampa Bay Rowdies, is leaving the team to manage Barnsley FC in the English Football League One. Collins, who previously played for Sheffield United FC, has signed a two-year deal with Barnsley. During his tenure with the Rowdies, the team experienced remarkable success, improving their rankings and reaching the USL Championship Final. Collins received numerous accolades, including Coach of the Year. While the Rowdies search for a permanent replacement, assistant coach Stuart Dobson will lead the team. Despite Collins' departure, the Rowdies remain a formidable force, currently holding a strong position in the Eastern Conference and maintaining an undefeated streak. The future looks bright for this dedicated and determined team.
