Gotham Glory: From Last to First, NJ/NY Secures Historic NWSL Championship Triumph
NOV 13 // Photo @NY/NJ Gotham FB // San Diego, CA
In an electrifying comeback story, NJ/NY Gotham FC went from last to lifting the 2023 NWSL Championship trophy in a heart-stopping 2-1 win against OL Reign at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego. Lynn Williams and Esther González were the heroes for Gotham, with Midge Purce claiming the Championship Game MVP title. The East Coast team, seeded sixth, made history as the sixth club to secure an NWSL title, playing all three playoff matches away from home. The game, witnessed by a record-breaking 25,011 fans, saw Megan Rapinoe exit early due to injury, casting a shadow over her legendary career. Despite Rose Lavelle's equalizer, Gotham clinched victory with Esther's header off a corner kick. Goalkeeper Mandy Haught's late red card added drama, but Gotham held on for their first-ever NWSL Championship. For defender Ali Krieger, it was a fairy-tale ending to her illustrious career, marking her last professional match and securing the title as team captain. Gotham's triumph was a collective effort, featuring contributions from Kelley O’Hara, Kristie Mewis, Allie Long, and others, while OL Reign's stars like Alana Cook and Sofia Huerta played crucial roles in their journey to the final. An unforgettable finale to a remarkable season, this Championship win adds a new chapter to the annals of women's soccer history.
